How to hem your jeans while keeping the original hem

I hemmed those jeans while keeping the original hem - love this technique!

Hi everyone,

On a pair of jeans, the original hem often has a worn out appearance that is part of the characteristic look of the jeans. It's possible to shorten your jeans while keeping this original hem - this way of hemming jeans is sometimes refered to as 'the magic hem' since only a close inspection will reveal that the jeans have been hemmed (but there is nothing magical to it, really).

I experimented this method for the first time, and over the last weekend I enthusiastically hemmed 4 pairs of jeans! The beauty of this technique is that you can adjust your jeans to the desired length, but you don't have to sacrifice the original hem. Personally I think that jeans look much, much better hemmed this way, and this is what I will do all the time from now on!

I'm so happy with this that I want to share it with you. Basically, the 'magic hem' is a binding, simple as that.

A) First, mark the desired length (the lower mark). This is the finished length you want (hem included). Add a second mark above, the height of the hem exactly.

B) Form a pleat inside, and place the top of the hem on the 2nd mark (the hem is also folded).

C) Now unfold the hem and measure the depth of the pleat.

D) Fold and press.

Pliez et pressez.

E) Now, some jeans have a relatively straight leg and the fold is quite the same circumference as where it will be attached on the leg. If it's the case, turn your jeans inside out and stitch very close to the hem, being careful not to catch it. Unpick the hem and go to K.

If your jeans have a flare cut and the hem is noticeably wider in circumference than where it will be attached on the leg, go to F.

F) Unfold the pressed pleat and cut along the mark. Of course, be careful not to cut across the hem since you want to keep it intact!!

G) Now, unpick the hem. It's also time to reduce the circumference of the hem by taking in at the side seam. I know it's a bit of trouble, but it's well worth it!

H) Re-attach the hem to the leg, right side on right side; it's important to be precise and to match the side seams.

I) Now you will want to stitch close to (but not on) the mark of the unpicked hem. This is to take into account the turn of cloth. Use a thread color that matches that of your denim (regular thread will do).

Turn your jeans inside out and stitch.

Tournez vos jeans à l'envers et piquez.

J) Check if your side seams match. It's also a good time to try on your jeans and see if you're happy with the length. Still the time to change things if you want to!

K) Now, cut close (but not too close) to the seam you've just stitched. The remaining portion will be encased in the hem.

L) Press the new seam.

Pressez la nouvelle couture.

The new seam is hardly visible

M) Fold the hem along the original pleat. Stitch on the outside, using a thread colour and thickness that matches the original. Generally a long stitch length looks best (on this pair I set my stitch length to 4).

Généralement, un long point convient mieux.

N) The final result, inside and out.

O) A sample of what I did this weekend... This way of hemming looks good both with narrow or wide hems.

On this pair it's virtually impossible to tell that the jeans have been hemmed / Sur cette paire on peut à peine discerner que le jeans a été ourlé

I love this method!  It might be a little more time consuming, but it's well worth the effort - you will love the results! Let me know if you have tried this before.

Maybe I'm just late to the party, but I must admit I had never heard of or seen the 'magic hem' until last year, when I bought on Ebay a pair of jeans that had been professionally hemmed this way. I was quite intrigued and had been wanting to try it for some time. I think jeans look so much better hemmed this way!
